{"id":1018,"date":"2008-03-12T19:09:35","date_gmt":"2008-03-12T19:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irdial.com\/blogdial\/?p=1018"},"modified":"2008-03-12T19:15:04","modified_gmt":"2008-03-12T19:15:04","slug":"the-third-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irdial.com\/blogdial\/?p=1018","title":{"rendered":"The Third Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The Third Wave<\/b> was an experimental demonstration of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fascism\" title=\"Fascism\">fascist movement<\/a><sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_14_0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_14\" title=\"\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"_ref-wave.html_0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-wave.html\" title=\"\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> undertaken by history teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Jones_%28teacher%29\" title=\"Ron Jones (teacher)\">Ron Jones<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophomore\" title=\"Sophomore\">sophomore<\/a> high school students attending his Contemporary History class<sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_14_1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_14\" title=\"\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> as part of a study of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_Germany\" title=\"Nazi Germany\">Nazi Germany<\/a>.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The experiment took place at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cubberley_High_School\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cubberley High School\">Cubberley High School<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palo_Alto\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Palo Alto\">Palo Alto<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\" title=\"California\">California<\/a>, during first week of April <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1967\" title=\"1967\">1967<\/a>.<span class=\"reference plainlinksneverexpand\" id=\"ref_timing\"><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.orghttp:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Third_Wave#endnote_timing\" class=\"external autonumber\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.orghttp:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Third_Wave#endnote_timing\" rel=\"nofollow\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/b> Jones, unable to explain to his students why the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" title=\"Germany\">German<\/a> citizens allowed the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_Party\" title=\"Nazi Party\">Nazi Party<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Holocaust\" title=\"The Holocaust\">exterminate millions of Jews and other so-called &#8220;undesirables&#8221;<\/a>, decided to show them instead.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Jones started a movement called &#8220;The Third Wave&#8221; and convinced his students that the movement is to eliminate democracy.<sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_14_2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_14\" title=\"\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> The fact that democracy emphasizes individuality was considered as a drawback of democracy, and Jones emphasized this main point of the movement in its motto: &#8220;Strength through discipline, strength through community, strength through action, strength through pride&#8221;.<sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_14_3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_14\" title=\"\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The experiment was not well documented. Of contemporary sources, the experiment is only mentioned in Cubberley High School student newspaper &#8220;The Cubberley Catamount&#8221;. It is only briefly mentioned in two <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Issue\" title=\"Issue\">issues<\/a><sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_13_0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_13\" title=\"\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"_ref-catamount_12_6_0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_12_6\" title=\"\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>, and one more issue of the paper has articles about this experiment, but without much detail.<sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_14_4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_14\" title=\"\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> The most detailed account of the experiment is an essay written by Jones himself some six years afterwards.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Several other articles about the experiment exist, but all of them were written after a considerable amount of time had passed.<sup id=\"_ref-wave.html_1\"><a href=\"#_note-wave.html\" title=\"\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><b>Chronology<\/b><br \/>\nJones writes that he started the first day of the experiment (Monday, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/April_3\" title=\"April 3\">April 3<\/a> 1967<span class=\"reference plainlinksneverexpand\" id=\"ref_timing\"><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.orghttp:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Third_Wave#endnote_timing\" class=\"external autonumber\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.orghttp:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Third_Wave#endnote_timing\" rel=\"nofollow\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/b>) with simple things like proper seating, drilling the students until they were able to move from outside the classroom to their seats and take the proper seating position in less then 5 seconds without making a sound.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> He then proceeded to strict classroom discipline emerging as an authoritative figure and improving efficiency of the class dramatically.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>On the second day he managed to meld his history class into a group with a supreme sense of discipline, community.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Jones named the movement &#8220;The Third Wave&#8221;, after the common belief that the third in a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocean_surface_wave\" title=\"Ocean surface wave\">ocean waves<\/a> is last and largest.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Jones made up a salute similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hitler_salute\" title=\"Hitler salute\">the one of Nazi regime<\/a><sup id=\"_ref-catamount_11_14_5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-catamount_11_14\" title=\"\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> and ordered class members to salute each other even outside the class. They all complied to this command.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The experiment took on a life of its own, with students from all over the school joining in: on the third day the class expanded from initial 30 students to 43 attendees. All of the students showed drastic improvement in their academic skills and tremendous motivation. All of the students were issued a member card and each of them received a special assignment (like designing a Third Wave Banner, stopping non-members from entering the class, etc). Jones instructed the students on how to initiate new members, and by the end of the day the movement had over 200 participants.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> At this point first Jones was surprised that some of the students started reporting to him other members of the movement who failed to abide by the rules.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the fourth day of the experiment, Jones decided to terminate the movement because it was slipping out of his control. The students became increasingly involved in the project and their discipline and loyalty to the project were astounding. He announced to the participants that this movement is only a part of a nationwide movement and that on the next day a presidential candidate of the movement would publicly announce existence of the movement. Jones ordered students to attend a noon rally on Friday to witness the announcement.<sup id=\"_ref-Jones_essay_10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#_note-Jones_essay\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Instead of televised address of their leader, the students were presented with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Noise_%28video%29\" title=\"Noise (video)\">an empty channel<\/a>. After few minutes of waiting, Jones announced that they have been a part of an experiment in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fascism\" title=\"Fascism\">fascism<\/a> and that they all willingly created a sense of superiority that German citizens had in the period of Nazi Germany. He then played them a film about Nazi regime.
