{"id":1198,"date":"2008-08-07T09:59:23","date_gmt":"2008-08-07T09:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irdial.com\/blogdial\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2008-08-07T10:04:01","modified_gmt":"2008-08-07T10:04:01","slug":"hobsons-choice-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irdial.com\/blogdial\/?p=1198","title":{"rendered":"Hobson&#8217;s Choice Cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The modern NHS is all<a title=\"NHS choice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dh.gov.uk\/en\/Healthcare\/PatientChoice\/Choice\/BetterInformationChoicesHealth\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> about choice<\/a>, so <a title=\"More NHS choice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/choices\/Pages\/Aboutpatientchoice.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">we are told<\/a>.\u00a0 Let me give you an anonymised real example of How NHS Choice REALLY Works: a child has an undiagnosed problem, it takes 3 trips to the childs GP before the child is offered a referral to a specialist hospital clinic.<\/p>\n<p>1. A letter is sent out explaining the &#8216;choices&#8217;: You can book your appointment online, or by phone!<\/p>\n<p>2. When booking (via your choice of method) you are offered the choice of hospital X or &#8230;er, thats it.<\/p>\n<p>3. You are offered the choice of date X at time Y or &#8230;. <a title=\"Hobson's choice\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hobson%27s_choice\" target=\"_blank\">er, thats it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So the choice is &#8220;<a title=\"Like it or Lump it\" href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/like+it+or+lump+it\" target=\"_blank\">Like it or lump it<\/a>&#8220;. Which doesn&#8217;t quite fit with the guidelines of:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a title=\"A new dfinition of choice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dh.gov.uk\/en\/Healthcare\/PatientChoice\/DH_085694\" target=\"_blank\">From April 2008, if your GP advises you that you need to see a specialist, you can choose to go to any hospital in England, including many private and independent sector hospitals. You can choose the hospital with the best reputation or shortest waiting times, or simply the one that is most convenient for you.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The NHS repeatedly says patient choice is guided by the availability of information (see links above).<\/p>\n<p>But when you, the patient or carer, appraise the available information and still make The Wrong Choice, the Department of Health springs into action. Would it not be simple, instead of trying to scare people into giving MMR to their children, to offer single vaccinations against each disease.
