The aim, however, is to help the elderly to<\/strike> ensure that children<\/em> lead safe and independent<\/strike> protected<\/em> lives. <\/p>\n

"Researchers are working on a “health<\/strike> safe<\/em> house” so sophisticated that it will not only track everyday habits but also check weight and blood pressure and predict whether a person is at risk of a serious fall<\/strike> child abuse<\/em>. <\/p>\n

"Britain is one of the largest investors in “telemedicine<\/strike>protection<\/em>” — using medical<\/strike> surveillance and monitoring<\/em> technology to help chronically ill<\/strike> deprived<\/em> and older people<\/strike> indeed all children<\/em> to be treated for longer<\/strike> continually inspected<\/em> at home rather than in hospitals or care homes<\/strike> through visits by social workers or education welfare officers<\/em>. <\/p>\n

"The system, developed by GE Healthcare and Intel<\/strike> Becta and the NSPCC<\/em>, uses sensors that track a person’s behaviour and send alerts when unexpected disruptions or data are picked up. Similar networks are already being used by<\/strike> for<\/em> about 3,000 people<\/strike> children<\/em> in care-home settings but researchers now hope to introduce a much more sophisticated model for private homes. <\/p>\n

"Patient data, such as risks of hypertension, diabetes and respiratory<\/strike> emotional disturbance, sleep disorders, over-attachment, concentration or eating problems<\/em>, would be combined with information on daily routines to create an algorithm capable of identifying subtle health<\/strike> abuse indicators or behavioural changes that might signal more serious problems.<\/em> <\/p>\n

"Examples might include how many times a person opens the fridge door or uses a tap<\/strike> logs onto NotSchool<\/em>; repeat trips to the fridge could signal mental impairment<\/strike> a danger of obesity<\/em> while failure to use the tap<\/strike> log onto NotSchool <\/em>might suggest an increased risk of dehydration<\/strike> lack of a suitable education<\/em>. <\/p>\n

"The next generation of sensors also studies activity such as use of the lavatory, time spent sleeping and when medicine<\/strike> mood stabilisers or enhancers<\/em> are taken, plus vital signs such as blood pressure, weight and blood-oxygen levels. <\/p>\n

"Work is under way on more advanced alerts that could identify changes to a person’s gait — providing an early signal of instability<\/strike> learning or behavioural difficulties, feelings of isolation or depression, lack of meaningful relationships or even substance misuse <\/em>and heightened chances of a serious fall<\/strike> abuse by a neglectful parent<\/em> — and how long it takes to get out of bed in the morning."<\/p>\n
