{"id":320,"date":"2006-06-27T11:37:52","date_gmt":"2006-06-27T11:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irdial.com\/blogdial\/?p=320"},"modified":"2006-06-27T11:40:51","modified_gmt":"2006-06-27T11:40:51","slug":"good-intentions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irdial.com\/blogdial\/?p=320","title":{"rendered":"&#8230; Good Intentions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2006\/06\/27\/child_convictions_passed_to_banks\/\">Reg Says<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Police will be able to pass details of child pornography offenders on to banks so that offenders&#8217; credit cards can be revoked.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Secretary has issued an order for the amendment of the Data Protection Act which will be read in both houses of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The order was requested by credit card issuers and is the result of three years of negotiation between the industry and the Home Office, according to a spokeswoman for issuers&#8217; organisation APACS, the UK payments association.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We asked for this because at the moment if someone uses a card to purchase illegal pornography there is no way under data protection legislation for the Police to pass that information on to card issuers,&#8221; an APACS spokeswoman said. &#8220;We already have the power to take a card from someone, but if they committed one of these offences we wouldn&#8217;t know about it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fair enough (although can a convicted person use a credit card in prison? Surely the problem is with people likely to reoffend being released on parole which is a slightly different issue.) but could this lead to banks refusing credit to, say, protestors arrested under the Terrorism Act who have had their NIR-linked police records or anybody else with certain behaviour frowned upon by the state. After all why stop at these bastards?
