Beech wood fires are bright and clear,
\nIf the logs are kept a year,
\nChestnut only good they say,
\nIf for long ’tis laid away
\nBirch and fir logs burn too fast
\nBlaze up bright and do not last.

\nHawthorn bakes the sweetest bread.
\nElm wood burns like churchyard mould,

\nPoplar gives a bitter smoke,
