i also have a very good grandma who says (on Brittney) "that is shit. what is she doing? do young people really spend money on that?" the disgust in her voice... its priceless.

she also says that to keep your drains clean, put two tablespoons of baking soda down the drain, then slowly pour 1 cup of white vinegar in after. will not clean big clogs, but is good maintenance, so do it once a month.

Mess, the possibility depends on what type of work you're looking for, what level of income you're expecting, what level of subsistence you'd be willing to put up with before achieving that income, where you're living at the moment and how the quality of life in London compares to it, how well you adapt to having to break into new social circles, how great your appetite for adventure for the sake of it is, etc etc etc etc etc etc ....................... as a practical starting point, contact a selection of estate agents to get an idea of rental rates, where in the vicinity you'll be able to afford to live, what sort of property you'll get for your money ........ sanity is a relative issue ....... you'll be surprised at how far your nervous system can stretch according to circumstances : this is one of the entertaining side points of the capital experience, and one that i'd recommend to anyone who enjoys seeing things just for the sake of it - whether you want to experience that as a continuous strain upon your system is something you can only judge once you're within it, and you will be able to judge only by making that leap ......... it's noisy, smelly, rude, infuriating, exciting, life-enhancing, dangerous, mischievous .... i chose to move far away, but am glad that i had the oppurtunity to at least be able to make the choice

The preservation of my sanity is an issue here also, please do not forget.

Oh sonar and those sweltering nights in Barcelona. What I wouldn't give to swap dreary old London for balmy Barcelona for the weekend.... Its Friday but its strange. I don't feel that I have a rant inside me today. So a few facts/thoughts instead. I'm reading Myself When I Am Real, Gene Santoros biography of Charles Mingus. It's really well done, very engaging. I have been a dedicated Mingus fan for years.... such soul... only the heartless could evade captivation. I also just received RH Blyths four volumes of Haiku, which I just LOVE. These are truly great poems. One will soon be on my back as a tattoo, dedicated to my wife. My existing tattoo, ai (love) will become just a title. Despite Ewan McGregors dreadful acting, The Pillow Book is a great film for lovers of body art. And the classic Japanese book of the same name, by Sei Shonagon, is an enlightening read. And I will be marked at Into You, check out their art, its pretty good if you want to be a canvas.
Clothing-wise today, I have on trousers from AJ Black which were described at the time of purchase as Phat Pants, to much laughter. Only now do I find out the risks. Finally, for those of you planning a big night out heres some advice I saw as I strolled along the grassy verge at the edge of the information superhighway...Just because you've fucked a guy is no reason to let him bum cigarettes after sex.

Record companies regularly deduct 15 percent off the top of sales as an allowance for "breakage" — a survival from the days of shellac records that now simply serves to reduce artist royalties by that amount. Despite being illegal, payola is rife, keeping interesting artists off the air in favor of the manufactured hitmaker of the week. And now, record companies — who have allied themselves with the just-as-bad motion picture industry – want to make it a felony for you to own a computer that is capable of copying music from a CD to your portable player without paying them money, even though courts have held that such copying is entirely legal.

Qow, Photoshop goes bad goth art. No wonder it's not for distribution. 6am, sadly I know nought about fixing things like that...only that once you get it fixed be sure to leave a dedicated AC adapter plugged in and use that only! They aren't that expensive (esp. probably not compared to getting it fixed!) so try not to share them between gadgets, that's my advice! Hope it's not killed too dead.

I get confused between amps and volts and watts and things, being a bit dim with the old maths. I used to share an AC power supply between my DR550 drum machine and my zx spectrum. Ran fine on the DR550, got so hot on the spec that it burnt out. Could have got on fire and burned my house down if I wasn't lucky with it, so I never messed about swapping psus again.

I'm pleased to hear that art is still alive, but as for history, well
that's another story...
As we spare a thought for Andy Warhol's archivists whocontinue to sort
through the 4,118 paintings, 5,103 drawings, 19,086 prints and 66,512

always his fingerprints), consider this -

Yesterday's Observer reported that in 1986, the BBC sponsored a massive
digital/multimedia version of the Domesday Book (first compiled in 1086)
containing 250,000 place names, 25,000 maps, 50,000 pictures, 60 minutes
of moving image and "an unknown number of words", all stored on 12"
laser discs which are now found to be unreadable.

same thing applies to the digital records of NASA's early space probes

while we can observe the first printed book in the British Library, and
the original Domesday Book in the Public Record Office in Kew, as for
email, no one has a clue as to the first message sent, nor of course its
content

The Darwinian consequences; only the analogue masters will be retrievable in the future; this means that everything else will be erased from history. Perhaps in the future, people will spend thier time trying to exactly reproduce the sound of S-Club 7 from oral descriptions given by double octagenarians. Probably not. This means that our decendants will live free of everything that was recorded post Rock & Roll. And the muso-genetic influences of these terrible days of bullshit music will be cut out of the gene pool.

The future will be clean my friends, hygenic, the evil of post rock boy band music hermetically sealed in digtial specimen tubes, rendered impotent, forever. No chance of a small pox like re-emergence. It will all die.

This is not conditional on you believing it or not by the way.

For those of you (who?) who do not do file sharing, but want to protect your boxes, do this:

SUPERTRICK

There is a way to disable access to certain websites by editing the Windows HOSTS file.

This file is located here:
Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\HOSTS
Windows NT/2000/XP c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000)

NOTE: HOSTS is the name of the hosts file and not another directory name. It does not have an extension (extensions are the .exe, .txt, .doc, etc. endings to filenames) and so appears to be another directory in the example above.

If you do not have a HOSTS file yet, download one HERE.

CAUTION: Please make an backup copy before trying to edit the HOSTS file.

You can open the HOSTS file by right-clicking on it and selecting "open with". Then select Notepad.

Add the following lines to the end of the HOSTS file:
127.0.0.1 www.brilliantdigital.com
127.0.0.1 desktop.kazaa.com
127.0.0.1 shop.kazaa.com
127.0.0.1 www.bonzi.com

You can use this same method to block other websites.

How exactly does the HOSTS file work?

The short answer is that the Hosts file is like an address book. When you type an address like www.yahoo.com into your browser, the Hosts file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or "telephone number," for that site. If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it can "call" that site. Most of the time, you do not have addresses in your "address book," because you have not put any there. Therefore, most of the time your computer asks for the IP address from your ISP to find sites.

If you put ad server names into your Hosts file with your own computer's IP address (which is 127.0.0.1), your computer will never be able to contact the ad server. It will try to, but it will be simply calling itself and get sort of a "busy signal". Your computer will then give up calling the ad server and no ads will be loaded, nor will any tracking take place. Your choices for blocking sites are not just limited to blocking ad servers. There is a way to install KaZaa without the spyware. Someone has created a custom installer to do this. Download it, and follow the instructions on this site:

I'm getting pissed because I can't contact Fflint Central or RSI recordings. Not that anyone knows who they hell they are. Blarg.
Also, it's real nice when someone (probably drunk) screams around the corner and hits my van really fucking hard, and then drives away like the scared little shit they are. I felt like kicking some serious ass last night. I travelled around and found their license plate number. It's pretty easy to find the car that hit you when it's missing the side panel that is now in my possession. Stupid fucking idiots. They are soooo fucked.

I am in London from the 4th to the 6th to see Current 93 in a tiny church; wish I could extend the trip to catch that show but it's unlikely. :(

Mr. Manning, do you know of Sona Rupa? I don't mean to advertise, but they have a good selection and quick and easy online ordering.

That's where I got the AMMP stuff.

Do you have The Raga Guide?

I'm just getting started on this stuff, but what an inspiring world of music...

Someone clever said:
"Trying to charge the filesharing community is like trying to get a Muslim to eat bacon. Other than that, I can't comment on ToadNode as I haven't tried it, nor do I plan to."

HAHAHAHAHA!
Toadnote, you can lick my sack. Then MAYBE I'll pay $5. But probably not even then.
Commence licking...

I'd rather pay $5 for a shanky assed hooker than use Toadnode.

mess, there are still things going on, but because i live down in dartmoor now i don't really keep up to date : navras have a form on their site that you can fill out to be kept informed of their activities, the south bank centre list events a few months in advance, as do the barbican ......... Sitar Maestro Vilayat Khan and Pandit Kishan Maharaj are playing at the Royal Festival Hall April 14th ...... i saw vilayat khan five years ago ; he was truely astonishing ..... he was playing in the main hall at the barbican, which holds a fair few hundred people, and within minutes had the audience murmuring their appreciation - you could feel the place loosening & sinking into its collective seat as he played, a palpable sense of joy sweeping around the room ..... if you can get to see him you won't regret it ............ i had to leave before he finished, to my eternal dismay, in order to catch the last train home, so might try & make it up there ..........

Is there anything remotely similar still ongoing in London right now?

Looks like we may be moving down south next year.

.......... uurrrr indeed ........

one of the most surreal events i went to was a 12-hour concert at the royal festival hall, 8pm to 8am, made up of a series of 2-hour duets ....... as the evening progressed the ragas became slower & slower & less & less "involving", until, at around 6am, the whole of the auditorium was asleep ! ........ in india these events stretch on for days ; ]
