curve of constant acceleration

to make a perfect curve would, if you tried to work it out using an idea i've just had, be mind-bogglingly impossible ..... you get into a situation that's already been covered much more eloquently by a well-know maths genius whose name i've completely forgotten, who noticed and then wrote that :

if you measure the distance between your current position and the position you want eventually to arrive at, divide it in half, then repeat again and again, you will never reach your destination

...... anyway ...... you could break down your distance axis and time axis similarly ..... the distance between points on one of the axis ( what's the plural of axis ) would have to increment by double between points ( work out which initial value will eventually double itself to reach your desired number ), the distance between points on the other axis would decrease by half every time ...... then join the dots accordingly ......... it's up to you how refined you make the curve ......

it'd be pretty simple to code ....... someone's bound to have come up with a much more elegant / eloquent theorem

Jim Allchin, Microsoft's operating system chief has described Open Source Software as "unamerican":

Open source is an intellectual-property destroyer. I'm an American, I believe in the American Way. I worry if the government encourages open source, and I don't think we've done enough education of policymakers to understand the threat.

Has anyone else figured out that "crimes" that have to do with PRIVATE PROPERTY are far more severe in our society than personal crimes? Someone will get 2 years for assault, but 12 years for burglary. Just shows what our society values and perpetuates - an idea of the wealthy's property being the most important thing to protect.
This is why open source is so dangerous and powerful. People like Allchin must think it's practically communist, and he'd be pretty right on that mark.

are there any maths heads out there?

in this equation (simple sine wave thing) what does the variable 'interval' specify? is it frequency? or wavelength? or something else?

var m = 40; // min value
var M = 80; // max value
var a = M - n; // amplitude
var interval = 3; // ???

y = (a/2) * sin(x/interval) + (m + (a/2));

also, i need help with some differentiation. i never did a level maths, and i wish i did now.

anyway, i want to make a curve of constant acceleration. i know the target (y) and the time in which it must reach this target (x) so i can make a nice straight line, but i want it to be a curve. is there anyway to do this?

thank you.

On the comments about Godspeed (you may skip the next two paragraphs to get to the third if you wish... no one's stopping you):
They may indeed be poor musicians (I do actually think the drummers are noticably talented), and they may record badly (though the last album was very crisp), and they may just be crummy students or whatever.
But what they write has impacted me more than any other music I have ever listened to. There's an emotion in their work (and I disagree about it all being the same stuff - I hear very different emotions all over... that's just my perception of it) that I can completely connect to. If that makes me a talentless hack, whatever. You can't ignore what you love.

This is why I hate it when people say bands "suck," "are shit," "are garbage," etc. I have even giving up saying that, say, Christina Augilera or whoever sucks. I don't *like* them, ie the music is not in my taste. I may find the music completely unappealing, uninteresting, and insulting, but I will never say that it "sucks."
Why?
Because there is always someone who likes the music. No individual has any impact on what someone else likes - I can't make a Ladytron fan, for example, enjoy Godspeed. Or whatever. Therefore, saying a band or artist or whatever that someone else likes sucks or is garbage or is uninspired crap is *insulting* to the other person *as* a person. It is a direct attack on their tastes and likes - something the other has no business with (unless, say, someone's playing irritating music at work - it should be shut off for the good of both people) or right to insult.
And I'm not into insulting other people's tastes. Taste is as personal as the colour of someone's skin, and I don't think it should be treated as something to be criticized (except, say, the radio example above).
(note: this isn't an attack on anyone here... just in case someone takes this as an angry post... it's not - and having opinions about bands or artists is very right and much different than saying they "suck")

Hel was the youngest child of Loki, sister of the Midgardsworm and the Fenris the Wolf (her mother was Agnrboda). She ruled her realm, also called Hel, or Niflheim. This was where the people who did not die in battle went (as the ones who died ended up in Valhalla). Not a nice place really. But this had about nothing to do with 'good' or 'bad' in our convoluted somewhat christian mindsets.

There are some great stories. I like these better than the christian stories. Ever heard the story about how Thor and Hymir went out fishing for the Midgardsworm? Or the competition between the Aesier and the Giants? Great literature, if you can call it that. Fascinating.

Hell Bank notes are used in funeral ceremonies in many far-eastern countries to provide money and goods in the afterlife for the dead person. The term "hell" just designates the place where the dead go, and does not carry the negative connotations that it does in the Christian world.

Now, on to "Godspeed You Black Emperor".

Naturally, after hearing about them so much from different quarters, the final straw came when my sister told me to check them out.

What a load of unrefined garbage.

That group, sound like a bunch of talentless students who were of the type that used to produce the most tiresome and uninspired "knock-off prog-rock"; dreadful, baleful, directionless soulless, ill concieved, rubbish.

That they are paraded around like something worthwhile is astounding. Even thier words are grey in shade, as witnessed by the spiretless, spineless, dour and moping interviews that can be read online.

That group are so bad, I had to check that I had bought the correct CD, and that some other, older garbage had not been mistakenly put into the jewel case.

Godspeed? Godspeed straight to hell. Do not collect $200.

Uninteresting "compositions" poorly mixing strings and electic guitars. Apalling production that is worse than what can be found on any demonstration tape. Poor musicianship, full stop. Everything about this group shouts "turn off immediately"; a total dead end, an enthusiasm sponge, designed to suck the life out of you, and render you completely inert.

I've spent around, uh, circa 5 usd this week. I think I've enough beer to hold out till after midnight with the spending more money.

The reason for Buy Nothing day being this limited, timewise, is that today is Black Friday. The reason for this name will come in a bit. In America, this weekend is traditionally a 3 day weekend, starting today, due to Thanksgiving. All the big Amerikkkan chains (K-mart, Wal-mart, what have we-mart) are generally losing money throughout the year. But, since christmas presents season starts now, they have thought up a clever scheme to make money. People have nothing to do with a friday off, so they might as well go be good consumers for the moneygrubbing whores that run their country (I swear I'm not as bitter as I make out to be. Goddamn fuckers). The *-Marts hold big sales, and even more people are dragged like zombies into their own downfall as they go spend all their freaking cash on stuff they don't need. Ah, but the name. As I mentioned, the stores are losing money, but this single day is enough to outweigh 11 months of "in the red," turning the budgets "black." See? If you buy nothing, and enough do the same, they will stay in the red, and the fuckers will die the death they push on the world.

Granted, it doesn't matter as much in the rest of the world, but it's still a viable statement, and I sure as hell won't be buying anything today. Not that I buy much anyway.

Speaking of Music that makes you want to destroy, check out Desaparecidos - Read Music / Speak Spanish. Music that makes you want to destroy? Godspeed ("motherfucker=redeemer" is the sound of thousands of people in a mass uprising destroying everything in their path), the last track on Sigur Ros' new album (), Acid Mothers Temple (though that's more like rocking out with your guitar on fire and flangers set to deep fat fry), Mogwai's "Like Herod" or "My Father My King," most Monster Magnet too (though that also falls into the Acid Mothers Temple category).
What about music that makes you want to make sweet, sweet love, or in the same sitting, stare at the wall wistfully in a deep state of melancholy? "[`rhubarb']," "st michel mont mixs," "4," or any number of Aphex Twin tracks. DNTEL's "(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan," Beef Terminal's album "20 GOTO 10," 54•40's "Alcohol Heart."

Incredibly, Henry Kissinger—the man who rivals Pol Pot for the dubious honor of being the person responsible for the death of the largest number of innocent people in South East Asia (and far surpasses Pol Pot in criminality when one factors in Kissinger's various levels of responsibility for wholesale slaughter and repression in other parts of the world)—still wields significant power in the United States; but his role as eager facilitator of mass murder, totalitarian repression and other atrocities is never discussed in polite society.

Fusker does not spoof referers... It would be impossible/inconvenient to do. Since the referers are sent by the browser, I have no control over them. I could have Fusker work as a proxy that actually loaded the images from the site with appropiate referers, then stored them locally and showed them to the user, but that would definitely be illegal, no grey areas.

Actually, deep linking is for some reason illegal in Denmark. Well, because the judges didn't pay attention to the case so now we have stupid precedent. You can't legally link to mp3 files. How's that, eh.

Notice that I consequently misspell referer. The nuts who created the HTTP spec misspelled it and the error made it into the recommendation, so now it's the standard. Tsk tsk.

Uh-oh! Here I go stealing bandwidth again...

Isn't it the same thing as file-swapping (but less so)... in that the more people see your images, then some may visit the original site etc etc etc in a large karma circle.
The internet needs a new sub-folder, where all those users that don't want to share even a link can all bugger off to and charge each other for the pleasure of doing so.

In some flaked out jurisdictions, its illegal to link to a site, let alone link to images in a site. Do a search for "deep linking" to read more of this insanity, or the DECSS fiasco with 2600 being prosecuted (sucessfully) for linking to sites. Sometimes, when someone finds that they are being hit by a popular image, they replace the image with something like this:

which is linked from http://leech.kthxbye.de/leech.gif .

Anyway, the solution that Mikkel gives solves this problem completely, but then, you have to know what you are doing to make it work...

Boogiejack is as ignorant as he claims the "thieves" are.

A webserver is configurable. If you do not configure it, it's the same as hiring a guard for your front door, but not giving him any instructions as to who he should not let in, resulting in everybody being let in. He can easily fix the problem of peopled deeplinking by checking the referer fields on the requests. These state which website the link is on. In the case of the image Alison posted below, the request header looks something like this:
GET /images/news/america.gif HTTP/1.0
Referer: http://www.ibmpcug.co.uk/~irdial/blogger.html

All mr Boogie has to do is have his server check requests and deny access for those with referers that do not start with "http://www.boogiejack.com/". Voila. As it stands, he is using the law to cover for his ignorance. Actually, I just tried posting an image here, but it appears that he is already checking referers. In which case, I'm puzzled as to why he rants and raves about theft. Of course, there are browsers & proxies that fakes referers, but those are in the minority and require that every user visiting the page with the "stolen" image use them... *scratches head*

Arguments for the Perceived Impending Revival of Imperialism

Or: Find the Emperor

In recent years there have been many criticisms of the capitalist systems by which most of the world's economies - even in China - operate. Since September 11, 2001, these have been accompanied by dire warnings from people on both sides of the anti-capitalist debate to suggest that the collapse of capitalism is, for better or for worse, imminent.

I disagree.

Smiling is infectious,
You catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today,

I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner,
and someone saw my grin.

When he smiled I realized,
I'd passed it to him.
I thought about that smile,
then I realized its worth.

A single smile just like mine,
could travel the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin,
don't leave it undetected.

Let's start an epidemic quick,
and get the world infected!
INSTANTLY WHEN YOU RECEIVE THE SMILE STARTER, YOU MUST SEND IT ON

WHY!?!?! FUCK WHY!?!?!?! I hate those emails, with cute cats and babys! I really hate them from all my heart. Wonderful things like smiling is spontaniuos. Why fucking FORCE it !?!?!?
Does anybody know about some kind of program that trashes mails with cute contencs (cute pic's of dogs, cats, babys and flowers)? Not that I dont like it - I love kittys, plants, flowers and even babys can be really cute and fantastic in real - but not in cyberspace, please please eliminate all 'cute' stuff from cyberspace -NOW

Circle the wagons boys!

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - Attorneys for the Bush Administration asked a federal court on Monday to order that documents on hundreds of cases of autism allegedly caused by childhood vaccines be kept from the public.

Department of Justice (news - web sites) lawyers asked a special master in the US Court of Federal Claims to seal the documents, arguing that allowing their automatic disclosure would take away the right of federal agencies to decide when and how the material should be released.

Attorneys for the families of hundreds of autistic children charged that the government was trying to keep the information out of civil courts, where juries might be convinced to award large judgments against vaccine manufacturers.

The court is currently hearing approximately 1,000 claims brought by the families of autistic children. The suits charge that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which until recently included a mercury-containing preservative known as thimerosal, can cause neurological damage leading to autism. Same thing. Taking out of circulation. Erasing from memory. Removal of technology and the capability to reproduce that technology. Preventing re-invention. Tough task. Social re-education that certain risks outweigh benefits may be a way. However, I believe this depends on individuals acting as part of a unified society. We currently act as individuals within a massive number of tiny societies, each with its own agenda. You'd have to shoot the metaphorical genie in front of each one of those groups or there would always be some thinking... 'Hey...nice shiny lamp... I could get rich/fat/safe/famous/high/powerful/fucked off the back of that baby... wonder what happens if I rub it a little...'

Parliament might have been denied its debate and the cabinet might have been silenced, but there are other means of holding the government to account. If, by 4pm today, his lawyers have failed to agree that he will not attack Iraq without a new UN resolution, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament will take the prime minister to court. For the first time in history, the British government may be forced to defend the legality of its war plans in front of a judge.
See you in court, Tony.

Re: The Lifeboat. Watched a program on Churchill the other day, which was excellent. One striking thing was the tanks used by both sides in 1939, almost indistinguishable in technology from those of the first world war. But by 1945... especially on the German side. From atomic theory to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From propeller biplanes to jet rockets and ballistic missiles. And the serious development of 'calculating machines'. So now 'we' are at war again, and the pressure is on. The predictions on the Lifeboat website may be no more than could be made by anyone with a day spare to think about it, but, scarily, they are not exactly far-fetched.

P.S. This bit may be incorrect "The Fermi Paradox refers to the question mark that hovers over the data point that we have seen no signs of extraterrestrial life.". However, the rest of that statement may not be too bad...
This tells us that it is not the case that life evolves on a significant fraction of Earth-like planets and proceeds to develop advanced technology, using it to colonize the universe in ways that would have been detected with our current instrumentation. Actually, it doesn't tell us anything about the size of the fraction, significant or otherwise. Maybe it says things about our detection, current stage of technology... Even 1 space-colonizing civilization would be significant. And it could be us if we could stop our petty arguments over property.
one Great Filter — an evolutionary step that is extremely improbable — somewhere on the line between Earth-like planet and colonizing-in-detectable-ways civilization Feasible, plausible idea. Ignoring random comet-strikes and the like, if we can't sort out moral problems such as distribution of wealth (e.g. solve famines, dissolve territorial boundaries, put religion into a non-provocative context) then we have no chance of maintaining a civilized control over technology (i.e. using technology in the context of and for the benefit of humanity rather than the benefit of shareholders) and an Extinction Event may be just a single 'accident' away.
The second excerpt I agree with also.
However, technology control, at present, is virtually impossible for numerous reasons ranging from the individual to governmental. The problem may be that no novel technology, particularly one which appears potentially unlimited and powerful, will be abandoned before it has been shown to have no (monetary) worth to current society.
I can't think of an example of a non-superceded technology which still has 'usefulness' which has been voluntarily mothballed by humankind for any reason, least of all ethical concerns. I concede that, until atomic energy was available (harnessed? - yeah, right) we had probably not reached the capability of generating our own Extiction Event. Now we have a range to choose from.
Whatever. Genies do not go back in bottles.

Academy seizes computers from nearly 100 mids
By JESSICA R. TOWHEY, Staff Writer
Officials at the Naval Academy have seized nearly 100 midshipmen's
computers that allegedly contained illegally downloaded music and
movies, sources said.

The raid occurred Thursday while students were in class, and a source
familiar with the investigation said the computers were being held by
the administration.

Cmdr. Bill Spann, academy spokesman, confirmed that an investigation
into what material is on the computers is under way, but declined
further comment.

He did say punishment for illegally possessing copyrighted material
ranges from a court-martial to loss of leave and other restrictions.

Computers are given to each midshipman upon entering the academy. During
their four years at the school, mids pay back the value of the computers
through deductions from their monthly paychecks.

Amanda Collins, a spokesman for the Recording Industry Association of
America, said yesterday that the Naval Academy was among the colleges
and universities around the country that were sent two letters from
entertainment industry and educational associations asking them to
address Internet piracy and establish policies against it.

I saw the best movie yesterday I have seen in such a long time. Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to her It was absolutly brilliant!!!
The movie has the best way to show us the need of love - giving, taking, recieving, dreaming, wanting, feeling it, the hole essence of life. But in a very very subtile and beautiful way, way different than other movies - no klichees at all. No loving couples as we are use to in so many movies, but love shown in another perspective - from the friendship of 2 men and their love... Their complicated and very fucked up love (some might even consider it sick) - to women in koma and eachothers as friends. It is truely a must see movie that captures LIFE - perfect!

My party went great and the dj's played their best. I walked on clouds when I walked home in the rain - and I didnt even do drugs that night! High on music and friends.
