No, I mean I would really love to receive something physical
Ah, I do know what you mean by that. There is something more personal about an object... maybe because it, well, exists in space. This counts for many things but mixes and albums for sure... there is something about a little mixtape that is special. The handwriting on the package, the little drawings. There is also mystery! Things are nice.

I am still incredibly stressed out from the first few days of school. Shifting from a full time repetitive job to full time artmaking is an extreme change of pace. Now that I know what is ahead of me I am very very stressed out. I hope this feeling will pass because I feel so helpless. It's weird how disruptive the summer is. There isn't even a point anymore of having a summer break (cultural lag).

That's great, but I definately meant tapes, or CDs. Server space is great, but I am stuck with 56k at home, and filtered broadband at work. No MP3s, and even OGGs have the bandwidth sapping and frankly I am there to work, so it would be wrong to get too involved in all that.

No, I mean I would really love to receive something physical, thru the post. Hand-crafted in the traditional way! Most of you must have the Irdial CDs, and some even have the Spunkle disc. It's nice to have "things".

Mix Tapes/CDs:
I have plenty of server space at vectorx.org, since I don't have time/money to work on anything there myself. Basically it's an empty server right now. I have been kept very busy by other responsibilities. Mixtapes are a cool idea though.

I have a Rickenbacker bass that looks something like this:

execpet the trim around the body is black instead of white and all of the chrome is black.

I also have a Goya acoustic guitar that gets played way more often (just about everyday to the Ricky's once every month or so). I love to play with strange tunings of my own devising.

I watched the entirety of that Pump Up The Volume doc at work over the past two days. Thanks for posting that, Claus. I've always avoided house (for no good reason) and am now eagerly awaiting the evening (friday!!!) to go out and dance with a better knowledge of the history behind the rhythms. Marshall Jefferson is definately my favorite personality in that film...

Barrie:
There MUST be a young woman or man that catches your fancy. Just grab them and kiss away! It will probably make butterflies dance in your stomach, but the shudders sent down your spine when you finally kiss will surely outweigh...

Mixed tapes:
I also immediately thought that digital fiels would be the best. But how wonderful it would be to get a Tape or CD with handcrafted liner notes, &c.! It could be a hell of a lot of fun to make a CD for one (or all) of you.
posted by Josh Carr , 3:23 PM Þ

A tape ring sounds like an excellent idea Davros!

We should decided on formats and stuff... I think that digital files would be easiest for all, but maybe people have other ideas...

There's quite a few of us here with web space if someone doesn't have anywhere to host it and maybe when the ring is complete they could be hosted on Irdial.com? Maybe?

Who knows.

Of *course*, this is entirely natural.

I attended and participated live in a RSHB programme, which was deeply monged, back in 2000 on one of my many trips to Leeeds, and they are probably the sole radio station that has played more of my stuff (and only the strangest of the strange stuff at that) than anyone else. And great chums too.

really, would you make me a tape?

In fact, we should all make each other tapes; find interested parties, put all the names into a roster, and mix them up. Then we make our mix partner a nice mix, and the favour is returned.

Shall I begin to tell you how Envious I am that you have the beautiful luxury of the Independent Study Drawing class? The thrill of fresh virgin sketch books clutched tightly to your chest as you scamper up the steps to the studio, smudgy pencils poking out of every pocket, charchoal, little metal pencil sharpeners with glinting blades, the crowds of new faces, new hats, and ohmigod-where-did-she-get-those-shoes excitement that only comes with a new semester.

You could always come on a field trip to Vancouver, there is a drawing exhibit on at the VAG.

School started yesterday. It looks like it will be both good and bad. I'm kind of wary now. I have an independant study drawing class that I'm somewhat worried about as I don't know where to start. And who knows what kind of crazy assignment I will be given tonight...

There was an Italo Calvino story ..."Beheading the Heads," the story of a society where the leaders are ritually executed after their term. Calvino showcases the futility of power: his authorities are liars and fools... Home secretaries would be on my list too.

Recall that TOPEX/Poseidon orbits the Earth at an altitude of 1300 km. The altimeter sends several thousand radar pulses towards the ocean each second then measures the time for the pulse to return to the spacecraft. Not only does the computer have to match the right transmitted pulse with the right received pulse, it has to compute the time of transit properly. An error in time of less than a second would mean an error of tens of centimeters.

To get the height of the satellite above the ocean, the time for the pulse to return has to be converted to range using the speed of light. However, the speed of light is constant only in a vacuum. The radar pulse travels through the atmosphere twice, where it is refracted by air molecules, water vapor, free electrons, and is partially scattered by surface waves. The size of these errors add up to more than 3 meters. However, all of them can be measured or modeled.

Finally, the precise location of the satellite needs to be known, since the sea-level is the difference between the satellite location above the center of the Earth and the height of the satellite above the ocean. If the satellite location were only good to one meter, then the sea-level measurement would only be good to one meter.

But, how accurate is the image on the previous slide? The accuracy is amazing, considering all of these problems listed above: about 2 to 3 cm (1 in)(This is altitude - mm). That's about the diameter of a quarter. We know this because we can compare sea-level measured by T/P with sea-level measured at the ocean surface with tide gauges.

That iTunes article seems to get lost along the way. What does iTunes have to do with bogus record deal contracts? Yes, it does help propogate the labels, but they are not going to change their practices. The article even states that iTunes is good when used with an independant label - artists profit much more in *any* mode of distribution on an indy label (unless the "indy" label in question is actually a major label stooge).
What I'm trying to say is that iTunes distribution and record contracts aren't even on the same page... where's the correlation? Why are people complaining about artists on major labels? If the artists cared about their profits they should not have joined a major label. It's not like they (artists) were forced to sign a contract - that was their own choice. All a consumer can do is boycott major labels, and that's easy enough right now. So where does iTunes fit in?

Just got back from a weekend of camping out in the alberta wilderness. Thanks to the (albeit little) human development the northern forest looks very desolate to my eyes, but still beautiful. The gravel roads and cutlines (huge lines of clear-cut to support powerlines) in the middle of nowhere are very interesting.
We are currently under massive grasshopper plague too - 100/sq. m - so in some places a big cloud of grasshoppers surrounds you wherever you walk.
We had a lot of fun camping, last night we built a HUGE bonfire on the beach out of giant logs of driftwood that went up like tinder. What a great night! If I can get ahold of my friend's pictures of the fire I'll post them here.
