time for the pub ... php not working, there is NO reason why not, computer being idiotic ; if i go to the pub and DON'T TAKE IT it will understand the hard way that being stupid for too long puts a strain on even the most resilient relationship ... it can stay at home ALONE, with no-one to talk to, ALL NIGHT, and when i come home i will blow raspberries and tell it what a wonderful time i had, how i relished the freedom of not having the constant flicker before my eyes, will leer beerily, and expect the script to peform perfectly as it should come the morning ... ENOUGH !

liquid modern world

This sounds very interesting. Odd that he said In our world of rampant "individualisation" but missed out on a few things that I think are important to mention alongside that: Individualism is selfish is destructive. I have noticed that these days most people do not enter relationships to better themselves and to better the other in doing so (as relationships should be symbiotic in this way). They enter relationships for a selfish desire to be fulfilled. And they always, always fail as long as people keep this mindset. The negative aspects of this are quite staggering. To enter a relationship means one must partly dissolve "the self" in connecting with another person. Maybe.
The materialist mindset has indeed spread to human relation. "If I don't like it, I'll just throw it out." Yes, that is the answer to everything, like the denizens of Leonia. It also means the person has absolutely nothing to hang on to, nothing to define him or herself. Which, I suppose, creates a bit of a paradox with my previous statement of dissolution of self - do these people even have a, or even a concept of, the self anymore?
This article made me think of another thing: I recall, a while ago, several BLOGDIANS were talking of the inability of science/statistics to explain everything (ie the falsehood of "science is god"). I think this idea is rather applicable here. No amount of statistical sociological study is going to figure something out here.

Re: MacOS X 10.3

My computer has finally reached the end of its life. It can no longer use any new software that comes from Apple. It's been a good five years, buddy. Now it's time to stagnate!

Nope, not that. I posted it as the book is on display where I work and I keep reading it. But speaking of Metzger, I once did a gig in one of his liquid crystal installations, supporting Pete Townshend.

Oh yes he's talking with Gustav Metzger as part of the leeds film festival (could be why you posted the link and the Jandek one ago) which is going quite nicely, I saw a Cuban film called Lucia on sunday which had a wonderful soundtrack. And yesterday there was some experimental stuff by Takahiko Iimura... and Asian horror films you have to have Asian horror films.

SunnComm to sue 'Shift key' student for $10m
By Tony Smith
Posted: 09/10/2003 at 20:47 GMT

SunnComm has threatened Princeton PhD student Alex Halderman with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) for exposing a key weakness in the company's latest CD copy protection technology, MediaMax CD3.

The company said today it will take legal action against Halderman for revealing how MediaMax CD3 can be bypassed by holding down a Windows PC's Shift key when a protected disc is inserted. [...]

That is so silly. See them act silly. Silly Billies!

Thanks for the tip, Akin. I inserted it into the box's css code. It doesn't seem to work at first glance, but it's on a template so I don't know if it does work until I see it in action (not possible right now until my server-side pal comes around). Cool.

it merely just runs along behind the floating box

float:left;

iswhat you need to make text flow around the right of a box.
posted by Irdial , 7:28 PM Þ

Speaking of MT, I am (verryyy sloowwlyyy) setting up an MT site of my own. I have been trying to make up a template index page... but I know nothing of html and unfortunately no time to really work with it. So I've been using the dreaded Adobe GoLive, which I can already tell dirties up code 2DMAXX. I have been toying with "floating boxes" which I am assuming are CSS elements. GoLive is frustratingly tight-fisted with what it tells you. However I cannot get text to wrap around them, it merely just runs along behind the floating box (a calendar/navbar on the right side of the page) so I unnecessarily need two floating boxes, one to house the content, the other to house the calendar.
Is this a terribly dumbassed, overcomplicated way to approach a page design? In an effort to be simple it seems I need to be more complex in terms of coding (a concept I have learned in my screen printing class, wherein I worked on several variations of a print and settled for the most simple visual solution - more work for more simplicity).
I was thinking of stealing Dreamweaver, but it might be too much for my computer to handle.

BLOGDIAL isnt going local....ive been "boning up" on CSS; Blogger seems to be better for BLOGDIAL than Movable Type; it feels freer, looser. What Blogger needs is RSS.

With CSS you have to change the way you think; tables make you lazy, CSS makes you think. Thats a good thing. I like thinking, dont you? See me think. See Alex think. Think Alex think! Think Akin Think!

I think Alun thinks. Think hard Alun! Think hard Alex! Think hard Akin!

Mary Thinks good. Good thinking Mary!

A myth that CAN dance

The dancing lord Shiva represents the constant process of creation, preservation and destruction of the universe. He trods on the dwarf, symbolic of Ignorance, which must be eliminated if a believer is to attain release from the eternal cycle of birth and death. In Shiva's upper hands are a drum, symbol of creation, and fire, symbol of destruction

An Essay on the Principle of Population

"An Essay on the Principle of Population, as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society with Remarks on the Speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and Other Writers."

It is an obvious truth, which has been taken notice of by many writers, that population must always be kept down to the level of the means of subsistence; but no writer that the Author recollects has inquired particularly into the means by which this level is effected: and it is a view of these means which forms, to his mind, the strongest obstacle in the way to any very great future improvement of society. He hopes it will appear that, in the discussion of this interesting subject, he is actuated solely by a love of truth, and not by any prejudices against any particular set of men, or of opinions.[...]

It is also what is used in Botox injections. Maybe it's what helps Bush and Bliar keep a straight face as they peddle this bullshit.
