Six Lies

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

It feels so different watching an aircraft carrier group coming toward you than watching it sailing away from you toward another part of the world.

I’m an American who used to live in New York City. All my life, when I heard about warships, it was US warships going places far away. I never even imagined hostile warships sailing toward New York. Now I’m in Tehran, and aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis is heading our way. And as it sails, people are discussing Israel and/or the US bombing Iran as if my family and 69 million other people weren’t even here. I’m getting scared.

Most Iranians that I know don’t worry about this as much as I do, though they’re wondering how the sanctions will affect the economy. Khomeini had a famous saying that we actually saw on a sign yesterday in another town: “America can’t do anything to us.” Some friends here speculate that Bush just needs an enemy so that he can continue his programs in the US, and that Iran is the enemy du jour. I wish I could believe that.

The way I see it, somebody has to stop the US president right now, and it’s very upsetting that the Congress isn’t doing it. My frustration is greater because I’m in a country where the Internet is not completely available. For example, I tried to send a donation to Dennis Kucinich, but PayPal wouldn’t take it because of the embargo. I tried to write to my Congressperson, but the Islamic Republic blocked the communication, presumably because it was with the US government. (Sometimes news stories that I want to read are blocked, too, but there are ways around that.)

If the US and/or Israel attack Iran, it will be a war based on lies, just like the Iraq war. Iraq didn’t have WMD, but Iraqis died in the hundreds of thousands. The lies about Iran seem intended to, first, make Iran look like the new Nazi state that must be bombed so as to avoid a new Holocaust, and second, make Americans fear that Iran will hurt our soldiers in Iraq or give nuclear weapons to terrorists who will hurt us in “the homeland.”

History shows that Americans are very susceptible to demonization of particular leaders of countries that the US wants to attack. Remember Castro? Noriega? Saddam? Now it’s Ahmadinejad. Whatever people think of views attributed to Ahmadinejad, it remains the case that it’s not morally acceptable to kill people because of their president, whether that president be Saddam Hussein, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or George Bush.

I want to discuss six big lies we are hearing to justify expanding the war to Iran.

LIE NUMBER 1: President Ahmadinejad “has repeatedly threatened to wipe Israel off the map.”

Even Al Jazeera English version based in Qatar keeps saying that. Why hasn’t this mistranslation been corrected after it’s been thoroughly exposed? (in the Guardian and prisonplanet.com)

Juan Cole, in Informed Comment, explained how “wiped off the map” was a mistranslation; Ahmadinejad was restating the official Iranian policy that the government system based on Zionism must end. And why the heck can’t newscasters learn to pronounce the man’s name? Anyone who knows Farsi could teach them in a minute. Why should we think they know what he said, in Farsi, if they can’t even say his name?

LIE NUMBER 2: The Iranian government is run by 1930s-style anti-Semites.

Last Spring, a story was planted that the Iranian parliament had passed a law forcing Iranian Jews to wear yellow badges. “Fourth Reich,” screamed a banner headline on one of the New York City tabloids. In a few days, the neocon source was disclosed and the story was completely retracted by the Canadian paper in which it was first published. The New York paper never apologized. When I mention the “yellow badges” to people here in Iran, they look incredulous. “But … that didn’t happen.” I know. But I’ll bet there are some Americans, and Israelis, who actually believe Jewish Iranians are walking around wearing yellow badges.

LIE NUMBER 3: Iran is bent on wiping out the Jews.

Maybe Americans should have a little humility and remember how recalcitrant the US was about accepting Jewish refugees fleeing Hitler during WWII. Iran has a very good history, under Cyrus the Great, of protecting the Jews. The long history of Jews in Persia is indicated by a monument to the Jewish prophet Daniel in the south of Iran. As for the European Holocaust deniers who were among the speakers at the Holocaust conference in Tehran, I just can’t figure it out, unless Ahmadinejad is trying to win popularity points with pro-Palestinian regional populations by appearing to be unafraid of Israel and the US. Or he could be a fool and/or a religious fundamentalist (like some other presidents who shall go unnamed).

LIE NUMBER 4: Iran is causing trouble in Iraq and threatening Arab states.

Everyone should be very clear: Who’s meddling in Iraq, who’s flying thousands of missions shooting at Iraqi citizens, who attacked whose diplomatic mission, who is detaining whose citizens, and who has announced that it is supporting subversive operations inside whose country and across whose border (from Iraqi Kurdistan)? Most likely some of the undemocratic and unpopular rulers in the Middle East are afraid that their own citizens may be attracted to the Iranian model. That may concern the US oil men and financiers who have business and military ties with them, but it’s not a reason for Americans to back destruction of Iran.

LIE NUMBER 5: Iran is dangerous to humanity because it’s trying to get nuclear weapons.

Other people who know more than I are writing about the nuclear issues. But regarding threats by Israel and the US to bomb Iranian nuclear research sites, that’s a violation of international law, not to mention a danger to innocent civilians. Regulating nuclear activities is the responsibility of the IAEA. So far, the IAEA has declared that Iran does not have nuclear weapons and is in compliance with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. That’s more than we can say about the USA, which is supposed to be actively disarming its 10,000 warheads, not refurbishing them and developing new kinds of nuclear weapons. Though there are good reasons to think Iran does not want nuclear weapons, let’s imagine, just for the sake of argument, that Iran would someday acquire them. Humanity has managed to live with other countries having nukes. The only reason Iran’s having nukes would be of greater concern would be if the lies spelled out above were true. But they’re lies.

LIE NUMBER 6: Iranians are looking to the USA to bring them democracy, just like the USA has brought democracy to Afghanistan and Iraq.

I’m living here in Tehran, Iran, now, with my family, as are many other Americans, Europeans, Asians, and other foreigners. We are inviting friends and relatives to come and visit. The skiing’s fine. More democracy and more civil liberties would be better, but there are elections and there are laws and there are non-governmental organizations and you can approach public officials. Whatever’s not right with this country is the business of the people here to work on. Some Iranians living in other countries want the US to “save” Iran. I don’t know, but I suspect people like that would like the US to magically bring back the good old days when the US-allied Shah sat on his throne and the well-off classes had a fine life. If anyone finds any overseas Iranians who actually are willing to see Iran bombed, I hope the reporters ask them if they have any relatives currently living in Iran. I hope Americans don’t take these has-beens too seriously.

Rosa Schmidt Azadi is a long-time peace activist, an anthropologist, and a retired civil servant who’s also a wife, daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, godmother, and the mother of two college students. After walking out of the smoke of the 9-11 attacks in New York City and returning to participate in the recovery effort, Rosa began working to prevent further death and destruction in other countries at the hands of the U.S. government. Participating in a peace vigil at the World Trade Center site for more than three years gave her the privilege of talking with thousands of people from all over the world about things that matter most. Dr. Azadi has earned two advanced degrees and is still learning. Currently, she’s splitting her time between Tehran, Iran, and upstate New York.

Watson On Monbiot

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Steve Watson has an unusually good piece about George Monbiot at Infowars.

George Monbiot is one of those people who I like to call ‘Ostrich Posturers’, and they all have features in common. The most important one is that they are almost completely ignorant when it comes to anything to do with science or technology. This is important, because any honest person with a scientific background will immediately be able to understand when something is ‘not right’ like the ‘pancake theory’.

If George Monbiot could do simple math, he would be able to say categorically that the ‘pancake theory’ is false. He says that he has gone through all of the evidence (a blatant lie) and finds it to be a, “confused…concatenation of ill-attested nonsense”. This is garbage.

If George Monbiot has found something specific that is wrong with what he ‘researched’ then he needs to say what it was he read and where he read it. Of course, he will not do this because he is intellectually dishonest. (update, as is clearly demonstrated by his pathetic attempt to re-write history by deleting from his blog, an essay he wrote in September 25 2001 that reads like he is a dyed in the wool 911 Truther, i.e., writing that actually looks at the evidence and smells a dead rat: see my comment to this post for a link to it! Welcome to the internets Monbiot, where everything you write is stored FOREVER!)

People who argue with Skeptics put up with idiots like George Monbiot all the time. They are rather simple minded and operate on a few rules:

  • Don’t bother me with the facts, my mind is made up.
  • If one can’t attack the data, attack the people. It is easier.
  • Do one’s research by proclamation rather than investigation. It is much easier, and nobody will know the difference anyway.

This psychotic irrational behavior is found where two sides are arguing where one side has a deeply entrenched position. George Monbiot says himself that people who question the official lie about 911, “…pose a mortal danger to popular oppositional campaigns”; he is only interested in protecting his life’s work and his “popular oppositional campaigns” and not about solving any problems permanently or getting to the truth about anything. His life’s work is being in opposition; take away the whole basis of that opposition, and you destroy not only his life, but his position in society as a leader / preacher in his sick religion. Of course everyone realizes that the ‘ ‘911’ Truth Movement’ is actualy a ‘popular oppositional campaign’ and one of the biggest ever. He is just jealous that he is not at the forefront of it, where he believes it is his rightful place to be.

George Monbiot is just the same as any person in a high position who does not want to be replaced by virtue of his ideas and theories being superseded. He has to knock down anyone and anything that is a threat to his place at The Guardian and as one of the high priests of the left.

Once again, no matter how or what he writes, the internets have made voices (and the rags he writes for) like his irrelevant. And by ‘the internets’ I mean the way those internets filter out garbage and allow people to get to the truth on their own, without a priest to guide them. Just look at the comments on each of his Guardian pieces. The simpering followers have nothing to say except vapid cheerleading and the people who have been inoculated by the internets tear him to shreds point by point.

George Monbiot just doesn’t get it.

The days of preaching from the pulpit of a daily newspaper and getting away with lies are OVER.

In the age of the internets, you can either tell the truth and address the facts without stupid skeptic tricks or have your reputation ruined when you blatantly lie and run away like a coward from reality. George Monbiot will not be taken seriously again by anyone except his brainless fans, who by their nature are irrelevant and ineffectual.

Kurt Nimmo is one of the people who could well take George Monbiot’s place as an ‘opinion leader’ and writer. He is precisely the sort of man that George Monbiot fears. This is why:

It stinks of desperation. George Monbiot, inveterate leftist of the foundation financed environmentalist persuasion, has once again taken a swing at the “conspiracy idiots” who believe government is capable of mass murder, including the reflexive murder of its own subjects.

Not unlike his brethren, most notably Noam Chomsky and Alex Cockburn, Monbiot buys the Ward Churchill version of events in regard to the attacks of September 11, 2001—that is to say Osama and a small number of cave-dwelling Wahhabi fanatics magically made NORAD stand down and defied the immutable laws of physics, thus delivering one to the conclusion a piece of paper cannot be slipped between Monbiot and the moonstruck followers of the neocons, as they all buy the same Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

“Why do I bother with these morons? Because they are destroying the movements some of us have spent a long time trying to build,” complains the former BBC employee. “Those of us who believe that the crucial global issues—climate change, the Iraq war, nuclear proliferation, inequality—are insufficiently debated in parliament or congress, that corporate power stands too heavily on democracy, that war criminals, cheats and liars are not being held to account, have invested our efforts in movements outside the mainstream political process. These, we are now discovering, are peculiarly susceptible to this epidemic of gibberish.”

In fact, Mr. Monbiot and his ilk are part and parcel of the “mainstream political process,” especially considering the degree of foundation funding and support his cherished “movements” receive, from the likes of the Ford, Schumann, Rockefeller, and MacArthur foundations, to name but a handful.

Monbiot’s “progressive” left was long ago sold down the river. In effect, the foundation oiled “movements” so dear to Monbiot’s heart are completely and utterly ineffectual, having accomplished dreadful little over the decades, and instead serve as a facile target of convenience for Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Michael “Savage” Weiner, Sean Hannity and the neocon fascists dominating the corporate media.

For all his effort and that of his pals, Monbiot has managed to make the machine of progress, as he gauges it, turn in reverse. It is not the 9/11 “morons” destroying Mr. Monbiot’s “movements,” but his own enervated struggle, his own inability to understand reality and deal with it, even as he has made a career out of complaint minus substantial result.

According to Monbiot, questioning the official version of events, replete with bad science and glaring omission, is “a displacement activity” and avoidance “of the real issues we must confront,” never mind Monbiot and his fellows have confronted for decade after decade “issues” they swear are “real,” only to slide backward down a long slope into the muck of irrelevance, made a laughingstock and a cavalcade of clowns by the corporate media.

heh…post number 777!

Not only is this completely correct, but there are so many people out there who agree (correctly) with this assessment (whose numbers are in the tens of millions) on a simple commercial level it makes sense to fire Monbiot and hire Nimmo.

It is this very real possibility that puts George Monbiot into a cold sweat, “They don’t love me anymore!”

And that’s the bottom line when it comes to newspapers.

China Gets it

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

[…] In the industrialized West, there evolved the prevailing Pseudo-religious dogma that human beings are at the centre of ‘G-d’s creation in the universe’. This dogma is the ideological motivation behind the on-going de-legitimization of the verfiable contact that people have had with Extraterrestrials (ETs). This apparent dogma has become the modern equivalent of the corresponding dogma, that “the world is flat”, which Church and other elites centuries ago used to champion. In contrast, free of Western pseudo-religious based dogma, the Buddhist milieu of China, has freed their scientific community, with the support of government, and ofcommunity participation, to seek to explore UFO incidences and evidence of human contact with Extraterrestrials.

What is dogma?

‘Dogma’ is a system of obfuscations, propaganda and related ideology, which elites present as “truth”, with the aim to maintain social control, and toexpand their own hold on power. Other examples of current operating dogma include schemes of socialization that aim to convince people that “capitalism promotes freedom and democracy”, that “privatization is a good thing”, and that “economic protectionism is a bad thing”.

A notable example of dogma, in the context of the so-called ‘War on Terrorism’, is that “the U.S. and its coalition partners are waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan not subtantively for oil, but to promote human rights;” meanwhile well-documented human destruction, suffering and oppression worsen. […]

Agoracosmopolitan

The Chinese get it, but will they be the first to marked with reverse engineered products? They have done it before.

UFO research is an appreciated and duly recognized science in China

Izvestia reports that China has a record number of UFO scientific and community-based organizations. There are many who even attempt to establish some sort of a contact with extraterrestrials. Their actions are protected by the National Society of the Extraterrestrial Studies, which was founded 25 years ago. This National Society is financed by the government.

Only professional scientists and engineers are allowed members in the Society. A person also required to have Ph.D. in science and have several published works about UFOs. About a third of all members of the society are also members of the Government of China.

The study and civic appreciation of Extraterrestrials are NOT systematically marginalized as the case in the industralized West, which tries to use dogma to ridicule community and academic UFO research initiatives, and also the work of ‘Exopolitics’ groups.

And finally:

Western science and pseudo-religions share corresponding systems of dogma, which seek to deny human contact with Extraterrestrials

In order to appreciate the systematized denial of human extraterrestrial contact and influences on Human civilization, which prevails in the West, one needs to appreciate that “official science” and “institutionalized religion” in the West are two different “heads” of the same body politic. Yes, “official science” in the West talks of “evolution”, and Western institutionalized religion talks of “Creation”. However, both groups have reached an apparent consensus to disregard clear evidence of verifiable contact and influences by Extraterrestrials on Human civilization. This joint denial is based upon a shared oppressive ideology, which seeks to repress critical human knowledge of cosmic associations and interactions with Off-world Human and other ET civilizations.

The very same apparent dogma shared between the Western scientific and institutionalized pseudo-religious Establishment, converges in their “community of interest” associated with their joint pursuit of venality and greed. Examples of the sell-out of integrity, and associated buying into ideology and compromises to elite-induced peer pressure, is well documented in the Western scientific community, that operates in a crass materialistic societal milieu, which ignores basic principles of human rights and democracy. This very same shared dogma between Western scientific and institutionalized pseudo-religious Establishments, is also responsible for the path of oppression, genocide, wars, racisms, and environmental destruction which scientific “techologicalocrats” and self-professed “Christian” pseudo-religious missionaries and other apologists have furthered and have supported.

Jesus who supposedly inspired Western “Christian” religion, which is based on corroborations in the Bible, sought to support the need for wisdom, accompanied by peace and lovingkindness. However, the actual historical practice of institutionalized Christianity, in contrast, has been to maniupate the masses into accepting bigoted views that are designed to complement the materialistic-centred objectives of an “organized power” elite.

Saying that “the Earth is round.. and revolved around the Sun” used to be an indictable offence with the prospective sentence of capital punishment, in Western “Christian” Society which regarded such talk to be the mutterings of seditious lunatics. “Official Science” and “institutionalized religion” in the West is not substantively inspired by the free-spirited pursuit of wisdom. Rather, these Establishment milieus in the West are guided by “elite ideologues” who in contrast with China, and for their own dogma-driven agenda, seek to delude the public on Extraterrestrial awareness, and other areas. […]

As human civilization is being destroyed under the hyprocisy which guides the Western Scientific and pseudo-religious Establishment, the timely needed enlightenment of human populations on a reported Extraterrestrial presence, could very well be led by China. The government of China notwithstanding accounts of human rights abuses, appears to have constructively prepared members of that society, on the kind of potentially vital awareness context, which Western governments continue to deny its own societal members. […]

Broken Iron is our friend

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

A programmer colleague writes:

Civil Disobediance is the only answer. On a rather predictable note the eye scanning has been dropped as all the machines run Windows and keep crashing ! Laughably the Uk has based it’s whole IT policy on MS Software so none of it is likely to ever work properly, however I am ready to resist.

This is very insightful. If the Linux advocates had been more successful in convincing HMG to adopt GNU / Linux / Open Source, these absurd, immoral and draconian projects would be more likely to succeed, since the infrastructure would be robust.

A rare instance where its a good thing that Linux is not being adopted.

Jultra Strikes Back

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

[…] Now the question that immediately comes to mind is which ‘officials’ (aka installed Bolshevik coup faction) within the Home Office ? Is it that radical foaming menagerie of creatures that good people tried for decades to keep away from power, often to the response of ‘conspiracy theorist’ etc.

Hell, well whatever. Sadly that effort just wasn’t enough and when you’re dealing with evil in its purest frorm, dealing with a total hatred of humanity, of society, of the most basic foundations of freedom, accompanied by a desire to topple that society, to destroy it, to create a dire hopeless world of technological, legal and constitutional permanent revolution where everyone is sufficiently plebified into a grey terrified goo, then we can afford to be, and need to be, a lot more aggressive.

You see this kind of story will be treated by its critics as something along the lines of a ‘concerning misunderstanding about relationship between individual and state’, an overreaction to crime and terrorism, but what makes me strongly believe it is not a misunderstanding and overreaction, but truly indicative of a deep-rooted palsied disorder, that manifests as a hatred of freedom and quite serious plot a to otherthrow society altogether is that this latest and most horrific of attacks is hardly in isolation.

Is this a state mistakenly doing all the wrong things, in a well intentioned way to try to keep the public ‘safe’ as some would have you think, or is it a state truly gone wrong ?

We’ve seen recently the bad breathed ever-angry (former-) communist John Reid, trying to inflict the worthless ID cards onto visitors working in the UK, and that unfortunately proves the point. There isn’t a UK anymore, there is no nation, it’s a just container, a cage to practice this crippling socialism protecting the world globalisation/banking hub.

The truth is this. All members of Parliament, all members of the civil service, all donors to political parties, all figureheads in the police, and people in the media who as far as Murdoch and the Sun go…well we’ll come onto that in another time, but anyway all those who are trying to do this are the enemy of the country and are an enemy of all people. There is no other way to say it and they going to have to be dealt with one way or another.

Additionally, I’m sorry to say the bumbling police officer carrying out politically-distorted duties, or the stupid contractror just installing X-ray cameras in lamp posts and elsewhere is inevitably making themselves a legitimate subject of reprisals, just as that pedophile who has been moved into the estate over the road from you is. It’s not enough to be just doing your job anymore, as good people like Craig Murray have said.

[…]

Jultra!

Thats the way we like it. The absolute truth said plainly and with some balls.

Hurricane Saddam Hussein

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Gun shots ring out in the Bagdad night
Enter GI Joe in the Palace hall.
He sees the Iraqis in a pool of blood,
Cries out, praise god, we killed them all!
Here comes the story of Saddam Hussein,
The man the The Great Satan came to blame
For somethin that he never done.
Hanged in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Three bodies lyin there does GI see
And another man named Musta, movin around mysteriously.
Thats the way we do it, he says, and he throws a grenade
We are robbin your country, I hope you understand.
And we aint leavin, he says, and he stops
Its a hard job being here like we’re your cops.
And forever wer’re gonna be your cops
And they arrive on the scene with IEDs flashin
In the hot bagdad night.

Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
Achmed and a couple of friends are drivin around.
Owner of ‘best taxi driver of Bagdad’ crown
Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
When GIs pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that.
In Bagdad thats just the way things go.
If youre Iraqi you might as well not show up on the street
less you wanna draw the heat.

Achmed had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.
Him and Jamal were just out drivin around
He said, I saw two men runnin out, they looked like terrorists
They jumped into a white car clenching their fists.
And miss GI just shook her head.
She said, wait a minute, boys, these ones aint dead
So they shot them there for all to see
And though these two could hardly more innocent be
They told all that they may have been guilty men.

Four in the mornin and they haul Rashid in,
Take him to Abu Ghraib and they bring him downstairs.
Lyndie looks out through one open eye
Points, glad you brought him in boys! he ready to die?
Yes, heres the story of Saddam Hussein,
The man the The Great Satan came to blame
For somethin that he never done.
Hanged in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Four months later, Bhagdad is in flame,
Chavez in south america, fightin for his name
While Haliburton still in the robbery game
Jihadi are puttin the screws to GI, lookin for somebody to blame.
Remember that murder called ‘911’?
Remember the man who they said got it done?
You think he’d like to play ball with the law?
Think it might-a been that phantom that you saw in Pakistan?
Just you forget the name of that man.

Dumb Joe Sixpack said, Im really not sure.
Uncle Sam said, a poor boy like you could use a break
You just dont get it, you dont know what’s at stake
Now you dont wanta have to pay five bucks a gallon.
Youll be doin society a favor.
That sonofabitch is brave and gettin braver.
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this nukular gig on him
He aint no gentleman jim.

Saddam could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much.
Its my work, hed say, and I do it for play
And when its over Id just as soon go on my way
Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a virgin along a trail.
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Saddam’s cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.
The judge made Saddam’s witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the Arab folks he was just a crazy nigger.
Not one doubted that he coulda pulled the trigger.
And though they could not produce the gun,
The judge said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white military jury agreed.

Saddam Hussein was falsely tried.
The crime was mass murder, guess who testified?
Only his enemies and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of Uncle Sam’s hand?
To see him obviously framed
Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to be from a land
Where justice is a game.

Now USUK criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Saddam got hung in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell.
Thats the story of Saddam Hussein,
But it wont be over till they clear his name
And leave the land he was from.
Hanged in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Thanks Bob… And thanks to the dude who mailed it to me.

Automated Targeting System

Monday, January 15th, 2007

If you’ve traveled abroad recently, you’ve been investigated. You’ve been assigned a score indicating what kind of terrorist threat you pose. That score is used by the government to determine the treatment you receive when you return to the U.S. and for other purposes as well.

Curious about your score? You can’t see it. Interested in what information was used? You can’t know that. Want to clear your name if you’ve been wrongly categorized? You can’t challenge it. Want to know what kind of rules the computer is using to judge you? That’s secret, too. So is when and how the score will be used.

U.S. customs agencies have been quietly operating this system for several years. Called Automated Targeting System, it assigns a “risk assessment” score to people entering or leaving the country, or engaging in import or export activity. This score, and the information used to derive it, can be shared with federal, state, local and even foreign governments. It can be used if you apply for a government job, grant, license, contract or other benefit. It can be shared with nongovernmental organizations and individuals in the course of an investigation. In some circumstances private contractors can get it, even those outside the country. And it will be saved for 40 years.

Little is known about this program. Its bare outlines were disclosed in the Federal Register in October. We do know that the score is partially based on details of your flight record–where you’re from, how you bought your ticket, where you’re sitting, any special meal requests–or on motor vehicle records, as well as on information from crime, watch-list and other databases.

Civil liberties groups have called the program Kafkaesque. But I have an even bigger problem with it. It’s a waste of money.

The idea of feeding a limited set of characteristics into a computer, which then somehow divines a person’s terrorist leanings, is farcical. Uncovering terrorist plots requires intelligence and investigation, not large-scale processing of everyone.

Additionally, any system like this will generate so many false alarms as to be completely unusable. In 2005 Customs & Border Protection processed 431 million people. Assuming an unrealistic model that identifies terrorists (and innocents) with 99.9% accuracy, that’s still 431,000 false alarms annually.

The number of false alarms will be much higher than that. The no-fly list is filled with inaccuracies; we’ve all read about innocent people named David Nelson who can’t fly without hours-long harassment. Airline data, too, are riddled with errors.

The odds of this program’s being implemented securely, with adequate privacy protections, are not good. Last year I participated in a government working group to assess the security and privacy of a similar program developed by the Transportation Security Administration, called Secure Flight. After five years and $100 million spent, the program still can’t achieve the simple task of matching airline passengers against terrorist watch lists.

In 2002 we learned about yet another program, called Total Information Awareness, for which the government would collect information on every American and assign him or her a terrorist risk score. Congress found the idea so abhorrent that it halted funding for the program. Two years ago, and again this year, Secure Flight was also banned by Congress until it could pass a series of tests for accuracy and privacy protection.

In fact, the Automated Targeting System is arguably illegal as well (a point several congressmen made recently); all recent Department of Homeland Security appropriations bills specifically prohibit the department from using profiling systems against persons not on a watch list.

There is something un-American about a government program that uses secret criteria to collect dossiers on innocent people and shares that information with various agencies, all without any oversight. It’s the sort of thing you’d expect from the former Soviet Union or East Germany or China. And it doesn’t make us any safer from terrorism. […]

This essay, without the links, was published in Forbes.

They also published a rebuttal by William Baldwin, although it doesn’t seen to rebut any of the actual points. “Here’s an odd division of labor: a corporate data consultant argues for more openness, while a journalist favors more secrecy.” It’s only odd if you don’t understand security.

It also needs to be pointed out that all over the world, in countries without a widespread credit card system, most airline tickets, no matter what the destination, are bought with cash.

That means that any ‘third world’ traveller has been given a higher score thanks to this bogus metric, when in fact its absolutely normal to buy airline tickets with cash all over the world.

These people are totally insane.

But you know this.

The ‘Surge’ Is A Red Herring

Friday, January 12th, 2007

by Paul Craig Roberts

Bush’s “surge” speech is a hoax, but members of Congress and media commentators are discussing the surge as if it were real.

I invite the reader to examine the speech. The “surge” content consists of nonsensical propagandistic statements. The real content of the speech is toward the end where Bush mentions Iran and Syria.

Bush makes it clear that success in Iraq does not depend on the surge. Rather, “Succeeding in Iraq . . . begins with addressing Iran and Syria.”

Bush asserts that “these two regimes are allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory to move in and out of Iraq. Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops.”

Bush’s assertions are propagandistic lies.

The Iraq insurgency is Sunni. Iran is Shi’ite. If Iran is supporting anyone in Iraq it is the Shi’ites, who have not been part of the insurgency. Indeed, the Sunni and Shi’ites are engaged in a civil war within Iraq.

Does any intelligent person really believe that Iranian Shi’ites are going to arm Iraqi Sunnis who are killing Iraqi Shi’ites allied with Iran? Does anyone really believe that Iranian Shi’ites are going to provide sanctuary for Iraqi Sunnis?

Bush can tell blatant propagandistic lies, because Congress and the American people don’t know enough facts to realize the absurdity of Bush’s assertions.

Why is Bush telling these lies? Here is the answer: Bush says, “We will disrupt the attacks on our forces. We will interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria. And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq.”

In those words, Bush states perfectly clearly that victory in Iraq requires US forces to attack Iran and Syria. Moreover, Bush says, “We are also taking other steps to bolster the security of Iraq and protect American interests in the Middle East. I recently ordered the deployment of an additional carrier strike group to the region.”

What do two US aircraft carrier attack groups in the Persian Gulf have to do with a guerrilla ground war in Iraq?

The “surge” is merely a tactic to buy time while war with Iran and Syria can be orchestrated. The neoconservative/Israeli cabal feared that the pressure that Congress, the public, and the American foreign policy establishment were putting on Bush to de-escalate in Iraq would terminate their plan to achieve hegemony in the Middle East. Failure in Iraq would mean the end of the neoconservatives’ influence. It would be impossible to start a new war with Iran after losing the war in Iraq.

The neoconservatives and the right-wing Israeli government have clearly stated their plans to overthrow Muslim governments throughout the region and to deracinate Islam. These plans existed long before 9/11.

Near the end of his “surge” speech, Bush adopts the neoconservative program as US policy. The struggle, Bush says, echoing the neoconservatives and the Israeli right-wing, goes far beyond Iraq. “The challenge,” Bush says, is “playing out across the broader Middle East. . . . It is the decisive ideological struggle of our time.” America is pitted against “extremists” who “have declared their intention to destroy our way of life.” “The most realistic way to protect the American people,” Bush says, is “by advancing liberty across a troubled region.”

This, of course, is a massive duplicitous lie. We have brought no liberty to Iraq, but we have destroyed their way of life. Bush suggests that Muslims in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Palestine are waiting and hoping for more invasions to free them of violence. Did Bush’s invasion free Iraq from violence or did it bring violence to Iraq?

It is extraordinary that anyone can listen to this blatant declaration of US aggression in the Middle East without demanding Bush’s immediate impeachment.

Republican US Senator Chuck Hagel declared Bush’s plan to be “the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam.” In truth, it is far worse. It is naked aggression justified by transparent lies. No one has ever heard governments in Iraq, Syria, or Iran declare “their intention to destroy our way of life.” To the contrary, it is the United States and Israel that are trying to destroy the Muslim way of life.

The crystal clear truth is that fanatical neoconservatives and Israelis are using Bush to commit the United States to a catastrophic course.

We of course, know that bush doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shia Muslims:

[…] The Iranian government doesn’t ’sponsor terrorism’. The entire cause of ‘terrorism’ is USUKs interference in other people’s countries. Look at this documentary to find out just how IGNORANT Bliar and Bu$h are; the killer part is where the presenter recounts the event where Bu$h took some Shias and Sunnis to the Super Bowl. They talked. Somehow, the discussion came round to Islam, and someone mentioned that Sunnis and Shias sometimes….’don’t get along’, whereupon The Great Satan said, “You mean that there is more than one kind of muslim?”. Fact: People actually DO see unknown, advanced performance craft with capabilities well beyond what ANY earth government or military is currently capable of producing. So many tens of thousands of reports from very credible and many technically adept witnesses going back at least to 1947 show that these objects seen are real and that they are not man made.

The same lame categorizing of witnesses who have seen these objects as “believers” is as incredibly stupid as categorizing people who have seen airplanes flying and on the runways as “believers”. Are they to be considered as airplane believers or as witnesses? i think it is those who label witnesses as believers that are the “true believers” of their own horse manure.

Ridicule and debunking of such sightings are the signs of little, fearful minds being confronted with strange things they cannot neatly place into their own extremely limited and prejudiced worldview. […]

Saddam Hussein’s execution: the US murders its creation

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

By Larry Chin

With the hanging of Saddam Hussein, the Bush administration, the mastermind of 9/11, has stayed true to criminal form, staging yet another offensive, grotesque and violent act of murder, “celebrating” it, propagandizing it, and demanding that the entire world join the George W. Bush lynch mob.

The week-long Saddam murder carnival is classic Bush administration, classic Karl Rove: find a relatively quiet moment (a holiday for most of the world), during which people are distracted, to lob a political bomb that dominates world media for days, in the hopes of “shocking and awing” public opinion and destroying political opposition.

Bush-Cheney-Rice has promised to “stay the course,” and here is more proof that they will, and thumb their noses at the entire world in the process.

The barbaric hanging of Saddam Hussein, and the resulting gibberish from the mouth of the insane, murder-loving George W. Bush, does not change worldwide opposition to the criminal Anglo-American policy one iota. It does not hide the criminality of the Bush administration’s illegal invasion and occupation, or the multitudes of crimes committed over the past several years. It will not halt for one moment the investigations underway — the political hanging — that the opposing Washington faction has in store.

It does not hide the historical fact that Saddam Hussein was, and remains even in staged death, a creation of the United States — America’s strongman, the CIA’s Iraq asset, put into power, funded, nurtured and loved by the United States, and the best friend and business associate of George H.W. Bush. Let the photographs of Saddam Hussein shaking hands with the likes of Donald Rumsfeld speak for themselves.

Let the fact that all of the weaponry that Saddam Hussein used to commit atrocities was supplied by the United States, along with logistics and the political a-okay directly from Washington.

Indeed, who was truly responsible for those massacres?

Indeed, which individuals — which “brutal regime,” which “horrible dictators” — truly deserve to go to the gallows for mass murder and crimes against humanity?

Which individuals are responsible for the atrocities and mass murder that have been continuous and daily since 2003?

Like his historical strawman brethren (Manuel Noriega, Osama bin Laden, etc.) Saddam Hussein, for whatever reason, never fingered the men who made him, despite many opportunities presented during his three-year kangaroo court. A final act of loyalty, perhaps.

But facts are facts, and these facts are documented history, for anyone to look up.

Saddam Hussein’s execution, Bush’s latest incitement, is sure to fan more hatred, and roil the mushrooming civil war and chaos. It will make the despised Iraqi puppet government (composed entirely of US intelligence assets and traitors), all the more unable to manage the chaos and anger, and the impossible rifts between factions. This, too, is part of the larger Bush plan to foment further violence and create more terrorism across the Middle East, and end all talk of negotiation; all talk of a “change of course.” All so that US forces will never leave the region, never end the “war on terrorism.”

Could a staged capture and execution of “Osama bin Laden” be far behind?

The nightmare reality of a world in chaos, in flames at the hands of the Bush administration, can no longer be obscured by violent, grotesque Orwellian propaganda designed to distract and divide.

The Barbaric Lynching of President Saddam Hussein

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

On the Holy day of Eid, the world watched in horror at the barbaric lynching of President Saddam Hussein of Iraq, allegedly for crimes against humanity. This public murder was sanctioned by the War Criminals, President Bush and Prime Minister Blair.

This sadistic act broadcasted to the whole world is a travesty of justice, and was meant to demonstrate the imperial power of the United States and serves as a warning to peace loving peoples that we must either bow to the dictates of the Bush regime or face the consequences of a public lynching.

The lynching was also an insult to all Muslims, as it occurred on the Holy Day of Eid, whereby Muslims devote themselves to prayer and forgiveness. It is all too clear that the war criminal Bush has no sensitivities whatsoever for Muslims on their pilgrimage to Mecca. This barbaric act is a sacrilege!

The entire trial process was a mockery of justice, no less a Kangaroo Court. Defence counsels were brutally murdered, witnesses threatened and judges removed for being impartial and replaced by puppet judges. Yet, we are told that Iraq was invaded to promote democracy, freedom and justice.

A peaceful country has now been turned into a war zone. Over 500,000 children died as a result of the criminal economic sanctions, and the latest findings by the medical journal, Lancet reveals that over 650,000 Iraqis have died since the illegal invasion of 2003.

The War Criminal Bush has killed more Iraqis than President Saddam ever did, if in fact he was guilty of any crime. If President Saddam Hussein is guilty of war crimes, then the world must find Bush, Blair and Howard equally guilty and the International Criminal Court cannot but prosecute these war criminals. The inaction thus far by the International Criminal Court against Bush, Blair and Howard exposes the double standard of the said Court, when it does not hesitate to prosecute war crimes committed in Dalfur, Rwanda and Kosovo.

If we support human rights and justice, we must condemn this barbaric lynching of President Saddam Hussein. There can be no excuse whatsoever for this injustice under any circumstances. War Criminal Bush and the puppet regime in Iraq have made a mockery of the Rule of Law.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad,
Former Prime Minister of Malaysia,
Member of the International Committee, For the Defence of President Saddam Hussein

Burn in hell, Mr. President

My first reaction when I read the transcript of President George W. Bush’s Veteran’s Day speech was anger. No, not anger. Rage. Blind rage.

How dare he, I thought. Not even the lowest, scum-sucking son of a bitch in politics would stoop to using a day to honor those who served to instead promote his lies-based, illegal, immoral exercise in mass murder called the invasion of Iraq.

Yes he would. George W. Bush is a pathetic, pitiless scrap of sub-human trash that lacks any shred of decency or morality. So why wouldn’t he desecrate the memories of those who serve our nation?

As a journalist, I’m expected to be dispassionate about events and those who shape them. But I cannot be so when it comes to Bush. He’s a liar and a traitor to the oath he swore when he became President of the country he now works so hard to destroy.

Bush is much, much more than just a bad president. He is a genuinely evil man, a raving lunatic who cannot face the fact that his insane policies have destroyed a once-great country called America. George Bush’s America is an arrogant bully distrusted by its allies, hated by most of the rest of the world and divided internally by his divisive, duplicitous actions.

I can no longer regard this maniac with journalistic dispassion. I may be a journalist but I’m an American first and, as an American, I cannot stand silent as a truly evil man destroys the country I love.

Polls show most Americans share my distrust of Bush. We all see him for what he is – a dishonest, opportunistic political beast who lets nothing stand in the way of his unbridled lust for power. He speaks of God at one moment and calls those who dare disagree with him “motherfuckers” the next. He has, without blinking an eye, sent more than 2,000 American military men and women, along with countless thousands of Iraqi civilians, to their deaths in a senseless invasion based on manufactured “evidence” and outright lies.

Then he has the gall to stand up on the day we set aside to honor those who served and continue to promote his lies and call those who see the truth traitors who aid the enemy.

Sorry George. Your lies don’t play here or with the majority of American citizens. It is you who has sold out your country, who is a traitor and who has committed treason against your office, your country and humanity.

God may one day forgive you for your sins but I cannot. Neither can the wives, husbands, parents and relatives of those you sent to die in your dirty little war. Neither can memories of those who served, those we honored on Veterans Day and those whose memory you so callously dishonored with your propagandist pap.

On second thought, I’m not even sure God can forgive you for what you have done. You have lied and you have killed and those are sins that even an understanding God may have trouble forgiving.

If there is justice in the afterlife, you will stand and face that justice for your sins. And may you burn in hell for them.

3 Note Oddity And Uk Telephone Error Beeps

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Someone with very good ears writes:

Hi,

Just thought I would write in on the off-chance that no-one has noticed this, though I’m sure someone must have done already.

I was thinking that the normal 3 note tone when you misdial a number or leave the ‘phone off the hook sounded, to my ear, identical to how the “Three Note Oddity” ( tcp_d1_12_three_note_odditiy_irdial.mp3 ) would sound if it was upped by an octave and played at double the speed.

I decided to stick the two into a wave editor, with the Irdial 3 note oddity in the left channel, and the telephone message in the right, and it turns out that the 3 notes are exactly the same.

I have no idea what it means, but it just seemed like a cool co-incidence. :-)

I’ve attached an mp3 (with the ‘phone notes slowed down by 50% and shifted down an octave to match the Irdial)
The ‘phone error in this is from the Telewest system, been a while since I’ve heard BT’s but from memory I think the tones are the same.

The Return of Jultra

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

“Today I fear that we are in fact waking up to a surveillance society that is already all around us,” Mr Thomas said.”

Well duh. I could have told you that for free and saved the glorious social democratic state a few quid on your wages.

The reality is this, those cameras need to come

down

, people need to tearing them down like the Berlin wall.

And people should not be paying taxes or accepting ‘social political punishments’ based on amalgamated lifestyle data, government departments should not be sharing information and the human ID radical quantized pleb-grid needs to be liquidated.

Goodnight.

Jultra is back!

the hideous disgusting turd, Gordon Brown tries use global warming as a political weapon against the population to mold them into a new shape, against a backdrop with a strong lobby in the establishment for more war and police-state measures, I think we need to take a much harsher approach and stop fucking around.

Some have said that the best thing for the UK (and especially the US) would be a military coup. That sounds a dramatic and dangerous proposition and indeed it is, but in all honesty, I don’t think it’s something that we can afford to rule out either. I don’t see it happening but quite frankly, the problem is, if you just carry on like this things are just going to continue to get worse, so some sort of really major revolt at least is necessary.

A state with cameras everywhere logging car journeys, sticking bugs in wheelie bins, house arrest, internment, biometric ID slave grids, information sharing, a new even more intrusive census etc etc etc is not a legitimate entity at all, it is now a vile and illegitimate mess (note legislation doesn’t make something legitimate) and it’s vital that we understand that these things are wrong and to put it bluntly, they need to be disposed of and there is a strong impetus to dispose of them.

People like Jultra really UNDERSTAND what is going on and what needs to be done to fix it.

Any glimmer of legitimacy is now gone or at the very very least flickering out, but personally I would say gone. In my opinion, the rule of law or the process of the rule of law is sufficiently compromised and twisted as to make its meaning overall considerably problematic. A strong contributory factor in this is a logged, watched society where everyone lives in some quantized pleb-grid, which itself also eats away at the very meaning of the law.

You see?!

When the state becomes a complete meaningless failure run into the ground by degenerate socialists like Gordon Brown and David Miliband obsessed by their own egos who want to hurt people with their stream of putrid filth and remold peoples’ lives as if the country were their private socialist toy factory, I think the state is something we have to reassess the legitimacy of, reassess the meaning of, and I’m sorry to say therefore I think the case for supporting a state gone malignant, also in light of these plans with council tax, green taxes and so on has to be very strongly reassessed and people should not feel that pouring money into this catastrophe is anymore an appropriate thing to do than pouring money into a pedophile ring. New and existing forms of taxation should no longer be accepted by rolling your eyes and treating it as a kind of tolerable burden anymore. They should now be challenged.

For how many years have I been talking like this?

Also, kind of on this point, the BBC needs to go, it has proved itself an utterly worthless heap of poisonous sickly drivel for the most moronic and politically-crippled in society. If it doesn’t want ads, then it should become subscription-funded or die. The concept of a ‘state broadcaster’ and TV tax is an archaic nonsense that belongs in the dusty wardrobe of history.

like everything else, you should refuse to pay for it point blank.

In the current climate though, I don’t think the state as it currently is; a grotesque monument to New Labour’s perversion and to the repugnant cowardice of the civil service and council workers, has any real legitimacy anymore quite honestly, it’s a broken, stained monster that people should now start rejecting and viciously chipping away at with a view to getting rid of what it has been made into, and where it is heading, and trying to restore it to something more appropriate.

Again, as I’ve said before, this is not a case of this policy is bad, that policy bad, the whole thing is bad. And yes, I feel that the UK is in real trouble, it is quite literally broken. I think we have to say that, we have to accept that and frankly there now needs to be an organised zero-tolerance movement against what it has become. […]

http://jultra.blogspot.com/

As it was in the case of the the Berlin Wall, the decent people need to come out en-masse and tear down all CCTV in a day of action to free us from surveillance. I have said this before. As in the case of the former East Germany, there will be many people who are actually FOR the surveillance of everyone. They will be pushed out of the way.

A critical mass of disgust is coming, and this mass is aggregating at a rate that is the cube of the square of the numbers of people who are pissed off at whatever new horror HMG comes up with. Soon this enormous mass will collapse into a black hole that will destroy this country. It will then be re-born, bursting into a Quasar of a new and better Britain, where the bright light of millions of suns will NEVER allow a Bliar or a Brown or a Reid or a Blunkett or a Straw to ever again soil this beautiful island.

DNA pioneer accuses the police of being overzealous By Stewart Tendler, Crime Correspondent

The man who developed DNA testing in the 1980s has attacked the spread of data collection by police as mission creep. Sir Alec Jeffreys said that the tool, which was meant to catch criminals who reoffend, has created a vast database of gene profiles of thousands of innocent citizens.

Professor Jeffreys, who is head of genetics research at Leicester University, said: Now hundreds of thousands of entirely innocent people are populating that database, people who have come to the polices attention, for example by being charged with a crime and subsequently released…
